17-Second Rule

Also known as 17 seconds technique

Set a timer for 17 seconds, hold a single clear thought about what you want while imagining it as already real, and repeat four times in a row (68 seconds total).

Widespread Bustle published a dedicated explainer in April 2025 titled "TikTok Says 17 Seconds Is All You Need To Manifest Your Dream Life," signaling mainstream press pick-up. Multiple dedicated TikTok discovery pages exist (#17secondsmanifestationmethod, #17secondsmanifesta) and multiple YouTube tutorials published across 2018–2025 collectively show sustained multi-year interest. The technique has been covered by The Everygirl and YourTango in addition to Bustle, and TikTok creators like @libertyavawalker and @coachcherylcouture have built followings around it.

What it is

The 17-Second Rule comes from Abraham Hicks teachings (channeled by Esther Hicks, detailed in their book Ask and It Is Given) and holds that 17 uninterrupted seconds of focused thought on a desired outcome marks a "combustion point" where the Law of Attraction begins to activate. Practitioners choose one specific desire, state it as a present-tense affirmation, and hold that thought with accompanying visualization for exactly 17 seconds — restarting if the mind wanders. Four consecutive 17-second rounds add up to 68 seconds, which Abraham Hicks claims is enough mental momentum to begin drawing the desire into physical reality. The technique appeals as one of the shortest structured manifestation practices available, requiring no journaling, scripting, or audio.

How to do it

  1. Find a quiet spot where you will not be interrupted for about two minutes.
  2. Choose a single specific desire and frame it as a short present-tense statement (e.g., 'I have a job I love and it pays me well').
  3. Set a timer for 17 seconds.
  4. Close your eyes, breathe deeply, and hold only that statement in mind — visualize it as already true, notice the feeling of having it.
  5. If any other thought interrupts, stop the timer, reset to zero, and start again.
  6. When the 17 seconds complete without interruption, pause for a breath, then immediately start a second 17-second round on the same thought.
  7. Repeat for a total of four uninterrupted rounds (68 seconds of cumulative focused thought).
  8. Release the thought after finishing — go about your day without mentally chasing the desire.

Where it comes from

Abraham Hicks (Esther and Jerry Hicks), introduced in their Law of Attraction teachings and detailed in the 2004 book Ask and It Is Given. The concept was largely confined to the Abraham Hicks community until TikTok amplified it in 2022–2025.
