SATS (State Akin to Sleep)

Also known as State Akin To Sleep, Hypnagogic looping

You lie down, let yourself get drowsy until you're right on the edge of sleep, then replay a short mental scene — maybe 5 to 15 seconds — on a loop that shows your wish already done, until you drift off.

Widespread The r/NevilleGoddard subreddit has ~247k members and SATS is consistently cited as one of its most-discussed techniques. TikTok's discover page for #satsmanifesting shows multiple creator accounts with individual videos exceeding 200k likes; the broader #nevillegoddard and #lawofassumption clusters have hundreds of millions of combined views. Dozens of dedicated blog guides, YouTube tutorials, and a 2025 hypnotherapy article on SATS confirm active mainstream practice across multiple platforms.

What it is

SATS is a technique drawn from Neville Goddard's mid-20th-century teachings. You wait until you reach the hypnagogic state — the brief window between wakefulness and sleep where the body is heavy and thoughts drift — then run a short looping visualization of a scene that could only exist if your desire were already real. The theory is that at this threshold the analytical mind relaxes its resistance, making the subconscious more receptive to new self-beliefs. Practitioners typically use it nightly for weeks or months, treating it as a form of daily mental rehearsal rather than a one-time event.

How to do it

  1. Define your desired outcome in one or two sentences, then reduce it to a single short scene — roughly 5 to 15 seconds — that implies the desire is already fulfilled (for example: a friend congratulating you, seeing your bank balance, or receiving a specific text).
  2. Set aside 15 to 30 minutes before your natural sleep time. Put your phone away, dim the room, and lie in a comfortable position.
  3. Breathe slowly — inhale for four counts, hold four, exhale four — repeated six times or until your body feels heavy and your mind slows.
  4. When your eyelids feel weighted and you notice a floating or tingling sensation, you are in the hypnagogic state. Bring your chosen scene into focus.
  5. Run the scene on a loop in your mind. Experience it from first-person if possible — notice the sounds, touch, or spoken words within the scene. Do not force emotion; let it arise naturally from the scene's details.
  6. If you drift or lose the scene, gently return to it without frustration. Continue looping until you fall asleep.
  7. Repeat nightly. Most practitioners report that results appear after consistent daily sessions over one to several weeks.

Where it comes from

Coined by Neville Goddard (1905–1972), a Barbadian-American mystic and New Thought teacher who lectured and wrote extensively in the United States from the 1930s through 1960s. He described the technique in lectures and in his book The Law and The Promise (1961). The acronym SATS was popularized by the modern online Neville Goddard community, particularly the r/NevilleGoddard subreddit, in the 2010s–2020s.
