Reality Shifting

Also known as Shifting, DR/CR shifting

You write a detailed script of a life or fictional world you want to inhabit, then use counting, affirmations, and visualization while falling asleep to attempt to experience that world as if you are actually there.

Widespread The TikTok hashtag #shiftingrealities has accumulated over 9.7 billion views as of early 2024, up from 1.5 billion in June 2021. The companion tag #realityshifting holds over 2 billion views. TheOdd1sOut's reaction video on YouTube gained 11 million views; creator Kristeau's tutorial garnered over 1.2 million. The trend received editorial coverage from Vice's i-D magazine and multiple mental-health outlets including The Mighty, Her Campus, and Sleepopolis.

What it is

Reality Shifting is a practice in which participants attempt to move their conscious awareness from their Current Reality (CR) into a pre-scripted Desired Reality (DR) — a parallel timeline, alternate life, or fictional universe such as Hogwarts or the Marvel universe. The core technique involves writing a "script" (a detailed document specifying the people, places, rules, and sensory details of the DR), then entering a deeply relaxed, hypnagogic state through counting, affirmations, or guided visualization until the DR feels real. Practitioners report experiences ranging from vivid lucid-dream-like immersion to subtle shifts in perception. The trend exploded on TikTok in late 2020 under the label "ShiftTok," driven largely by teenagers seeking escapism during COVID-19 lockdowns.

How to do it

  1. Write your script: create a written document detailing your Desired Reality — its setting, inhabitants, rules, your name and appearance there, and any 'safe word' to return to your Current Reality.
  2. Prepare your space: lie flat on your back in a relaxed position (the 'starfish' position is most common), optionally play binaural beats or subliminal audio.
  3. Enter a hypnagogic state: close your eyes and relax every muscle group progressively until you feel heavy and on the edge of sleep.
  4. Use your chosen method — the most popular is the Raven Method: silently count from 1 to 100, repeating a shifting affirmation (e.g., 'I am shifting') every ten counts while visualizing your DR in sensory detail.
  5. Watch for 'shifting symptoms': tingling, vibrating sensations, flickering lights, or a feeling of floating, which practitioners treat as signs the shift is working.
  6. Open your eyes in your DR: upon reaching 100 (or upon waking), visualize yourself opening your eyes in your scripted Desired Reality and interact with it as you would a vivid dream.
  7. Return: use your pre-written 'safe word' or simply intend to wake in your Current Reality when you are ready to come back.

What people use it for

  • Escapism / entertainment (visiting fictional worlds like Hogwarts or the MCU)
  • Practicing a desired real-life scenario before it happens
  • Healing past memories by scripting alternate outcomes
  • Self-exploration and identity play
  • General stress relief and relaxation

Where it comes from

Rooted in Neville Goddard's mid-20th-century self-concept work and the r/DimensionJumping Reddit community (launched 2016), the modern iteration crystallized on TikTok in September–October 2020 when teenagers began sharing tutorials and "shifting experiences," particularly targeting fictional universes. The practice's TikTok identity — the DR/CR vocabulary, scripting conventions, and named methods like the Raven and Julia methods — was largely community-built with no single credited originator.
