Law of Assumption
Also known as LoA, Neville Goddard method

What it is
The Law of Assumption is a manifestation framework developed by New Thought teacher Neville Goddard (1905–1972) and heavily revived on TikTok from 2021 onward. The core idea is that your outer circumstances reflect what you persistently assume to be true inside your imagination; to change what you experience, you change what you assume. Practitioners use three main tools: daily visualization while in a relaxed, near-sleep state (called SATS — State Akin to Sleep), affirmations repeated in first person as already true ("I am in my dream relationship"), and "revision" — mentally replaying past events with the preferred outcome to dissolve old limiting beliefs. Unlike goal-setting, the method asks you to act and think from the point of view of someone who already has the thing, rather than someone working toward it.
How to do it
- Identify one specific desire and write it down with sensory detail — what it looks, feels, and sounds like to already have it.
- Each night before sleep (or just after waking), enter a relaxed, drowsy state. This window is called SATS — State Akin to Sleep — when the analytical mind is quietest.
- In that state, replay a short mental scene (5–15 seconds) that implies your desire is already fulfilled — for example, a friend congratulating you, or holding the object you want. Engage all senses. Loop it until it feels real.
- During the day, monitor your inner dialogue. Replace habitual thoughts of lack ('I hope this happens') with first-person present-tense statements ('I have this').
- If a past memory contradicts your desired state, practice 'revision' — replay the memory mentally with the outcome you wanted, replacing the stored emotional charge.
- Persist without changing the assumption based on what the outside world currently shows. Goddard called this 'remaining faithful to the end.'

Where it comes from
Developed by Neville Lancelot Goddard, a Barbadian-American New Thought teacher active in the 1940s–1960s. He published works including "The Power of Awareness" (1952) and "Feeling Is the Secret" (1944). The term "Law of Assumption" is his coinage. The framework was largely dormant until a TikTok revival starting in 2021, accelerated by the "lucky girl syndrome" trend in late 2022/early 2023.
