Future-Self Journaling

You write in your journal from the point of view of a future version of yourself who has already achieved your goals, using present tense as if those outcomes are current reality.

Widespread Popularized by Dr. Nicole LePera (@the.holistic.psychologist), who has 9 million Instagram followers and describes "thousands" of people downloading and using her Future Self Journal daily. Her practice is the subject of multiple YouTube tutorials (e.g., "How to Future-Self Journal" at youtube.com/watch?v=vhaX1CeQGCk, "Increasing Gratitude and Joy with Future Self Journaling" on her channel), covered by Vice in two separate features, discussed on The Holistic Psychologist podcast (Lemonada Media), and has an active TikTok discovery page at tiktok.com/discover/future-self-journaling with multiple sub-tags. The broader #journaling hashtag has 2.8M+ TikTok posts, and future-self framing is a dominant sub-genre within it.

What it is

Future-Self Journaling is a daily writing practice, developed and popularized by clinical psychologist Dr. Nicole LePera, in which you write not to your future self but as your future self — describing your life, feelings, and habits from the perspective of having already arrived at your goals. The method leverages neuroplasticity: by repeatedly rehearsing a new identity in writing, you build neural pathways that make those behaviors feel familiar and attainable. Each session takes roughly 5–8 minutes and follows a set of structured prompts covering gratitude, pattern-shifting, and embodiment of desired traits. It differs from a vision board or affirmation list in that it asks you to inhabit a specific identity rather than merely describe a wish.

How to do it

  1. Choose one specific behavioral pattern you want to shift (e.g., how you handle stress, your relationship with money, how you show up in relationships).
  2. Write 1–3 affirmations that reinforce the new pattern — short, present-tense sentences your future self would say as fact.
  3. Open your journal and write your daily affirmation in full.
  4. Complete the prompt: 'Today I will focus on shifting my pattern of…' — name the habit clearly.
  5. Write one gratitude statement grounded in your current life, not a hypothetical future.
  6. List 3 traits your future self will have — qualities, not achievements (e.g., 'calm under pressure', 'generous with time').
  7. Write: 'The person I am becoming will experience more…' — fill in what is missing now.
  8. Write: 'I have the opportunity to be my future self today when I…' — identify one concrete action today.
  9. Close with: 'When I think about the person I am becoming, I feel…' — sit with the emotion honestly.
  10. Repeat daily for 30 days. Consistency matters more than length; 5–8 minutes is enough.

Where it comes from

Created and popularized by Dr. Nicole LePera, a clinical psychologist who calls herself the Holistic Psychologist, starting around 2018–2019 on Instagram. The practice became a core component of her 2021 bestselling book "How to Do the Work" and its companion journal. LePera's global community grew to over 9 million Instagram followers by 2024–2025, making the method one of the most widely distributed self-directed psychology tools online.
